The Society of Women Engineers student chapter at Prairie View A&M University is one of the most active engineering societies on campus. Over the past five years, we have strengthened our chapters’ membership, visibility, and service. We are a growing chapter that has a strong resolve to empower and advance women of color who major in engineering at PVAMU.Â
The mission of PVAMU SWE is to strengthen and empower women of color engineering students by:
- providing education about the challenges facing women of color engineers in academia and the workplace
- creating a sense of identity and community
- providing resources for women of color engineers and future engineers
- enhancing leadership and professional skills
- encourage and inform young women of color of the opportunities that exist in engineering, computer science, and technology
We envision an organization where all members feel a sense of belonging and of purpose. Your university experience is not confined to the classroom. PVAMU SWE exists to help you acquire the leadership and professional skills necessary in today's world - together, in a challenging yet inclusive environment.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), founded in 1950, is a non-profit educational and service organization. SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in those aspirations and be recognized for their life-changing contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders. The organization's four objectives are as relevant today as they were more than 50 years ago:
- To inform young women, their parents, counselors, and the public in general of the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities open to them.
- To assist women engineers in readying themselves for a return to active work after temporary retirement.
- To serve as a center of information on women in engineering.
- To encourage women engineers to attain high levels of educational and professional achievement.
The mission statement, adopted in 1985, states: The Society of Women Engineers stimulates women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expands the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in the quality of life, and demonstrates the value of diversity. |
